Welcome to our Broadband Glossary. We compiled a comprehensive collection of Broadband and Internet related terms and definitions. - Favorites
An Internet browser tool
that allows a user to flag and return to his or her favorite and/or frequently
used websites. May also be called Bookmarks or Hot List, depending upon your
browser.
- Firewall
A security system designed to protect a network from external threats, such as viruses, Trojans, and hackers. A hardware and software combination usually makes the firewall that separates a Local Area Network (LAN) from a Wide Area Network (WAN) and prevents unauthorized access to the LAN through the use of electronic security mechanisms such as IP filtering and address remapping.
- Frame Relay
A protocol, or set of rules, for sending packets or bundles of information. It is used across the interface between user devices (such as routers, bridges and host machines) and network equipment (such as switching nodes).
A frame includes a description of the packet (for example, plain text, HTML, images), the address of where it is going, and the return address.
- File Transfer Protocol or FTP
A way of transferring files over the Internet or a network. Using FTP, you can both upload (send) and download (receive) files including text, graphics, sound, animation, and complete software programs between your computer and another computer.
A Web address that begins with "ftp://" lets your computer know it should use the File Transfer Protocol when communicating with a specific Web site. See also Anonymous FTP.
- Frames
In a Web site, frames refers to the use of multiple, independently controllable sections on a Web presentation. This effect is achieved by building each section as a separate HTML file and having one "master" HTML file identify all of the sections.
